This photo reminds me of my grandfather, Leonard Victor Holmgren, working in his garage. He invented a few things in his life, including a prosthetic leg with a hip joint, and my uncle Erik Holmgren continued with his own prosthetic inventions. Perhaps the most interesting inventing work my grandfather did was the the first mitral heart valve (as part of a team, but he did the actual inventing and making, in his garage).

At Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town, professor Christiaan Barnard, who performed the first heart transplant in the world, used this valve for the first time in two operations, one of them on a nursing sister, who only had weeks to live. After a few weeks she was not only alive, but back in charge of her ward.

Later in his life, my grandfather had a heart operation where a more modern version of this valve was inserted which saved his life! He went on to live till almost 95 years of age.

God works in mysterious ways!

My grandfather’s work inspires me to have a go at things I might not otherwise be game to try. Perhaps there is someone in your life who inspires you. Perhaps you can inspire other people.
